An Update from Anna’s New Family

Big Heart was delighted to hear from Anna’s new family recently. Here’s Anna relaxing with her new friend Abby and here’s an update from Anna’s new person:

“Anna is such a wonderful, sweet girl! And her calm gentle demeanor is the perfect complement to Abby’s energy. The day I brought Anna home we were met at the top of the stairs with snarls from Abby and Abby  sure that Anna did not go anywhere near her “things”. Anna just ignored Abby and stayed out of her way, but she did not take on the submissive role or seem afraid of Abby. They did fine together on walks with Anna just sticking close and Abby making sure she was in the lead. The next day I had to go out and Anna scratched at the door behind me as I left and Abby stood up in the window to look at me as if to say: “What?! You’re leaving her here?!” I got home early not sure what I would come home to, but everything was fine. Within 2 days Abby was following Anna around the house whining at her in the hopes that she would play. Anna wasn’t keen to play, but was happy to now have access to some of Abby’s “things”. By the end of the week Abby and Anna were playing: the odd game of tug o war and some fun chasing and wrestling. Anna does not play as much as Abby would like, but at least once a day they have a noisy tussle – usually in the evening while I am trying to watch TV. Good thing for Netflix, I just hit pause and wait for the ruckus to be over.J If I am working at the computer I am usually bookended by two sleeping dogs and it is wonderful to look down on either side of my chair and see my girls.

Anna has a nice comfy bed beside mine and that’s where she spends her nights. Abby has always preferred to sleep in the living room, so it is a good arrangement. And what a welcoming committee I have when I get home! I can barely make it in the door and I am bombarded by 2 very affectionate, wiggly, happy girls.

Abby is the beautiful one and people always stop to comment, but Anna has the sweetest face with gentle, soulful eyes   and you can tell she is an angel just by looking at her. I am so happy to have Anna in the family and that Abby has a friend and companion.”

We wish Anna and her person a long, happy and healthy future together!

Lexi needs your help!

This is 4 month-old  puppy Lexi (with her best friend)  before the fall.  In spite of her family’s best efforts to supervise this rambunctious young Rottie, Lexi got herself into  big trouble: she fell from a very high retaining wall and broke one arm. Unfortunately for Lexi, the break is very complicated and Big Heart’s vet is performing surgery on her today so she’ll be able to run and jump again.

Orthopedic surgery requiring screws and a plate demands skill, patience, and afterward, supervised recovery time which means that after flying Lexi to the Lower Mainland for help, Big Heart will be assisting the family with the considerable financial cost of Lexi’s adventure.

We hope Lexi will never jump over anything this high again but, in the meantime, we’d be grateful if you would consider a donation to help us help Lexi.

We appreciate your support!

Tilly has been Adopted!

Update:

Tilly has been adopted!  She’s found a wonderful family of animal-lovers and has joined a happy group of cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and fish, not to mention her devoted new people.  We’re sure they’re all going to have a happy time together and we’ll have news soon about Tilly’s treatment plan.

We knew that Tilly was off to a positive start on her next adventure when Tilly’s new 9-year-old companion presented us with a donation he’d gathered to help pay for her surgery! Big Heart is grateful to Tilly’s new people for their willingness to help her through this process as they keep their eyes on the active future we know they’re going to enjoy with this beautiful dog.

If you’d like to help with Tilly’s veterinary expenses, please click on one of the links below or contact us at <bigheartrescue@gmail.com>.  Thanks for helping Tilly!

———————————————————–

Tilly came with Smokey and Latte from a northern community recently and we’ve discovered that she has some serious knee problems.  As you can see from her pictures, Tilly is unable to walk normally . Big Heart is exploring the options for Tilly and we’ll have an update soon about her treatment plan.

Tilly is a soulful pup with a gentle disposition and lots of love to give her people.Smaller than Smokey and Latte,  some might even say she was the runt but no one who looks at this beautiful face would ever believe that! She’s a happy, active pup who loves to play with her foster sister and have fun.

If you’re interested in adopting beautiful Tilly,  please fill in an Adoption Application. Big Heart will pay for Tilly’s surgery and support her adopters throughout the healing process.

Note: We adopt to residents living within a two hour driving distance of the Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island. We cannot accept applications outside of Canada.

Blue: an update

Good news:  Blue’s family has been located!  While Blue and her soon-to-arrive puppies still need Big Heart’s support, Blue no longer needs to be transported to the Lower Mainland.  Big Heart is sending food and supplies for Blue and we’ve offered to place her pups and spay Blue when the time is right.  Fingers crossed that everything goes well for Blue.

 —————-

Blue is a 2 year old Rottweiler/Shepherd cross who is expecting her fourth litter and urgently needs your help.  Although Blue is gentle and sweet with everyone, she was left behind to starve.  Now Blue is homeless and soon to give birth.  She’s good with other dogs including her rescuer’s Chihuahua, and has endured a lot in her short life.

We need to fly Blue to safety immediately as the airlines will not fly puppies until they’re 8 weeks old. Blue can’t wait that long. Big Heart will provide full support to Blue’s foster family and to Blue’s puppies when they arrive.  Please contact Big Heart  at <bigheartrescue@gmail.com> immediately if you’re able to foster Blue.

Here’s Smokey! Adopted!

Smokey is one beautiful pup!  Part Lab, part Husky or Malamute or maybe even Shepherd, he’s the leader of the pack.  An active little guy who loves people and is smart smart smart, Smokey would love a breed-knowledgeable home with active people who will give him the exercise, training and fun which he needs to become the strong, balanced leader he was meant to be.  Smokey will grow into a big dog before you know it so plan on lots of fun in training classes with this amazing dog.  If Smokey sounds right for you,  please fill in an Adoption Application.

Note: We adopt to residents living within a two hour driving distance of the Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island. We cannot accept applications outside of Canada.

Latte (now Bailey) has been adopted!

Latte is a cute, active 10 week old pup. She’s well socialized and plays non-stop with her brother Smoky and foster brother Chance.  Like all pups she is sweet and cute but a lot of work. If Latte sounds right for you,  please fill in an Adoption Application.

Note: We adopt to residents living within a two hour driving distance of the Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island. We cannot accept applications outside of Canada.

Big Heart welcomes new Directors

Big Heart Rescue Society wishes to welcome new Directors to our organization and to thank outgoing members of the Board.  In particular, we thank founder and past President Gail Moerkerken who retired in August 2011. We’re grateful for all the hard work and commitment which our Board has contributed.  Without their dedication, Big Heart would be unable to serve the communities we work with and to assist the companion animals who come into our care.

Many organizations reach a point when it’s time to rethink and restructure on the basis of the experience of past years and Big Heart is in the process of revitalization now. We remain committed to all of the animals we’ve assisted and to all of the communities we’ve served.  We look forward to continuing to work with all of you in the months and years to come.

Max is ready to meet the world (update: adopted!)

Athletic, active, gentle and smart

Max is a happy boy that’s trusting and friendly to all he’s met.

His new family should be active and prepared to take him out for lots of exercise and playtimes.  Though not mandatory another family dog for company would be awesome.  We know Max is part Husky but the rest could be just about anything. He’s about 18 mo old and a very big boy.

Max spent his life roaming and struggling for enough food to eat. He’s transitioned easily into life inside and you’d never know he hadn’t lived inside before. In the evenings he settles well in the house, playing with his new toys and being teased by the cat but when left alone for periods of time, he gets anxious.  He will pull things out of closets and re-arrange the room and sometimes chews on interesting things. His foster mom is working with him on changing this behaviour and we anticipate it will be resolved.

If you feel Max should be in your life, please fill in an Adoption Application

Note: We adopt to residents living within a two hour driving distance of the Lower Mainland and Southern Vancouver Island. We cannot accept applications outside of Canada

This beautiful boy is Max (update: adopted!)

He’s in foster care learning about big city living and will be up for adoption soon.  He’s about 1.5 years old and good with kids, dogs and cats.
….more about him next week.
