Terra2006 to 2010: A Happy Life

Terra came to us after years of abuse and neglect. The short version of her story is that she arrived in a suitcase, with inner and outer scars, and had never seen grass, sky, or love.

Terra was gallant

Despite her beginnings, Terra was a gallant dog. She flung herself into her new life with faith and joy. She looked her foster mother in the eye and wagged her tail. She grew a new white coat, learned to walk down stairs without falling, and discovered the joys of playing with her doggie family members—Ari and Winnie. Every morning, she woke up with the sun and ran from dog to person to dog, waiting for activities and food and fun. From a horrible past, she faced an uncertain future with heart and hope.

Terra was happy

Terra had that infectious Eskie smile. Once she realized that plenty of food came twice a day, runs in the woods or park were a daily occurrence, and she could go in and out of a dog door into the blessed sun anytime she wanted, she began to smile nonstop. Terra just loved life. A car ride? Splendid! A walk in the park? The best! Dinner? Time to run in circles and do flips in the air (literally!). Terra loved every minute of her new life. And her joy was infectious.

Terra was trusting

Not many spirits could survive years being locked in a bathroom, mouth wired shut, and covered in filth.  But Terra not only emerged, but came into the arms of Big Heart Rescue and then her new family ready to give humans a chance again. Although she had only experienced fear and abuse, she still trusted that life could be good, people could be kind, and all could be better. And Terra was right. We called her the magical Teflon dog—the bad stuff rolled off and she faced the future with trust, a smile, and a loving heart.

Terra was an Eskie

But, most of all, Terra was an Eskie. She was gorgeous and plush. She carried her tail curled over her back the proud Eskie way. In motion, she was poetry. Like all Eskies, she barked (a lot!). Like all Eskies, she needed loads of exercise and ways to occupy her active mind. Like all Eskies, she chose her friends wisely and was friendly but slightly reserved with all others. Terra was kind to all children and all dogs. She never needed a leash because if she strayed to investigate a fallen tree or a gurgling creek, she would run back full tilt when called. She may have been purchased on impulse because Eskies are adorable puppies. But, they are not for everyone. And because they are so often inbred, they are genetically susceptible to numerous inherited diseases. In the last year that Terra was with us, she developed two eye diseases that cause blindness, one of which is very common in Eskies.

Terra deserved better

Terra deserved kindness, and good food, and exercise. Terra deserved to be bred by a conscientious person who tested his or her dogs for genetic diseases so that more puppies would not grow up.
